Commvault Launches Conversational AI for Backup & Security

Commvault Launches Conversational AI for Backup & Security

Commvault, a global leader in cyber resilience and hybrid cloud data protection, has introduced a new conversational approach to managing enterprise resilience. The company announced that users can now interact with Commvault Cloud using simple natural language, thanks to its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server a secure, policy-driven connection between enterprise systems and trusted GenAI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise and Anthropic’s Claude.

With this innovation, organizations can configure, operate, and automate essential cyber resilience tasks from initial setup to recovery checks just by asking, in a format that feels as natural as speaking to a coworker. The goal is to simplify complex security operations while still maintaining the strict governance and control enterprises require.

Commvault explains that this conversational model opens up new opportunities for speeding up and automating data protection workflows across SaaS, cloud, and hybrid environments. Instead of navigating technical dashboards, users can request backup or resilience actions through voice or text and the system executes authorized tasks instantly and securely in the background.

To demonstrate the experience, Commvault provided an example conversation where the AI assistant not only detects that a DocuSign instance isn’t backed up, but also proactively offers to set up and schedule backups on the user’s behalf. These real-time capabilities apply to all workloads protected under Commvault Cloud, enabling a unified and scalable management interface.

Christopher N. Colla, Vice President of Information Technology & CIO at B&G Foods, shared his perspective:

"With this kind of AI simplicity, we can spend less time managing routine backup jobs and more time thinking about how to strengthen our resilience strategy. It's so easy to ask our AI assistant to handle a backup or check a recovery status it's the same way we ask it to write an email or summarize a report. Now, that same simplicity applies to keeping our data safe."

Industry analysts also recognize its potential. Johnny Yu, Research Manager at IDC, stated:

"Commvault's conversational AI is a pragmatic application of GenAI for data protection. Its focus isn't AI autonomy but rather optimizing the interface between the data protection tool and the human user. That said, it does lay the groundwork for AI autonomy by creating traceability and accountability for every AI action."

In addition, Commvault is pushing toward a future where AI plays a more active operational role. Pranay Ahlawat, Chief Technology and AI Officer at Commvault, explained:

"At Commvault, we're moving beyond conversational interfaces to enable agentic resilience - where AI can act on behalf of teams, safely and transparently. By adopting the Model Context Protocol, we're giving enterprises the foundation to automate recovery and protection workflows within the guardrails of the NIST Risk Management Framework - auditable, policy-driven, and role-based access controlled. This is how we bring simplicity and trust together in the age of AI operations."

Security remains a core focus. All interactions move through Commvault’s MCP server, which enforces encryption, authentication, and access controls. Importantly, Commvault does not train external AI models using customer data ensuring full compliance and enterprise-level privacy protection.
