EnStream Partners with Proximus to Fight Phone Fraud in Canada

EnStream LP, a joint venture backed by Canada’s major national mobile operators, has teamed up with Proximus Global, a prominent name in digital communications, to introduce a new API aimed at combating recycled number fraud and improving customer protection. The launch is designed to help businesses verify whether a mobile number has been reassigned, reducing the risk of sensitive information being sent to unintended recipients and minimizing account vulnerabilities across Canada.

Recycled number fraud has become a growing concern, especially as cybercriminals find new ways to exploit outdated information. When a phone number becomes inactive, mobile network operators eventually reassign it to a new user. Without proper visibility into these changes, companies may unknowingly direct one-time passwords, account alerts, or confidential data to a completely different individual creating opportunities for identity theft, account takeovers, and unauthorized transactions.

According to TransUnion, nearly 17% of Canadians reported losing money to fraud last year, with average losses of CAD$2,013 per victim. Recycled number fraud is one of the emerging threats contributing to these figures, particularly because businesses rely heavily on phone numbers for security and verification. The lack of real-time insight into number reassignment often forces companies to use slow, multi-step verification processes, which impacts both security and user experience.

The new API introduced by EnStream and Proximus Global streamlines this process. It gives organizations immediate confirmation of whether a number has been reassigned and identifies the timing of that change. With this data, enterprises can trigger re-verification steps, block unauthorized account access, and prevent sensitive communications from reaching the wrong person. This proactive approach strengthens digital-facing security while reducing the operational strain of manual reviews and repeated authentication loops.

Upinder Saini, President and CEO of EnStream, emphasized the importance of tackling this issue, stating:

“Fraud doesn’t just hurt victims financially it undermines the trust that people place in digital services every day. Even a single victim is one too many. At EnStream, our mission is to protect Canadians by making fraud prevention seamless and reliable. This partnership with Proximus Global allows us to provide businesses with real-time intelligence to keep accounts secure, while ensuring customers enjoy safer, more frictionless digital experiences.”

EnStream supplies the verified intelligence directly from Canada’s major mobile carriers, ensuring accuracy and authenticity. Proximus Global standardizes this data and provides the API layer that businesses can easily integrate into their existing systems. The solution is particularly relevant for sectors such as identity services, fintech, communications, commerce, and infrastructure industries where secure verification is critical. EnStream will deliver this capability both through direct enterprise partnerships and through distribution partners, with Proximus Global serving as the first.

Highlighting the collaborative nature of fraud prevention, Ben Vandermeulen, Chief Revenue Officer at Proximus Global, noted:

“Securing digital communications everywhere is central to Proximus’ mission, but it cannot be achieved by a single entity. Preventing fraud requires collaboration between telcos, service providers, and enterprises worldwide. This partnership is proof of that. Through APIs, Proximus Global makes EnStream’s critical intelligence easier for businesses to access and integrate, enabling them to act quickly and protect both themselves and their customers from fraud.”

Together, the two organizations are making it easier for businesses to verify customer data, protect accounts, and deliver safer digital engagements across Canada strengthening trust at every step of the customer journey.
