Mimecast Launches API Email Security with Full Threat Detection

Mimecast Launches API Email Security with Full Threat Detection

Mimecast has introduced a new API-based email security solution designed to deliver full-scale threat detection without requiring complex infrastructure changes. With this launch, Mimecast aims to eliminate the traditional compromise between rapid deployment and comprehensive security coverage.

Typically, organizations deploying cloud email security must choose between quick setup and advanced protection. However, Mimecast’s new API-driven architecture removes that limitation by delivering gateway-level threat protection directly through API integration. The solution integrates seamlessly with Microsoft 365, allowing businesses to deploy powerful email security features without altering MX records or modifying existing mail flow configurations.

As a result, companies can activate advanced security protection within minutes while maintaining the same detection capabilities offered by traditional gateway-based systems. The platform includes a comprehensive set of protection tools such as deep URL inspection, malware sandboxing, behavioral artificial intelligence, and advanced Business Email Compromise (BEC) detection.

Importantly, Mimecast’s detection technology relies on AI models trained on more than 24 trillion data points collected across over 42,000 organizations worldwide. These models allow the system to identify sophisticated phishing attempts and impersonation attacks with greater accuracy. According to the company, the platform can detect three times more BEC and credential phishing attacks compared with conventional security methods.

At the same time, the launch addresses growing security concerns within enterprise collaboration environments. Recent data shows that 64% of organizations believe native collaboration tool security is insufficient, while 53% report an increase in phishing attempts and 48% experience rising BEC attacks. Mimecast’s new API deployment directly targets these vulnerabilities by providing enterprise-grade threat detection that works alongside existing cloud platforms.

Ranjan Singh, Chief Technology and Product Officer at Mimecast, said:

“Standalone ICES vendors secure email. Mimecast secures the human behind it. We've invested in AI and detection engineering that the market said couldn't be delivered through API architecture. The result is a fundamentally different approach to email security, one that gives organizations full protection without compromising deployment speed.”

The platform includes multiple security capabilities designed to provide layered threat protection. For instance, Multi-Vector Threat Protection (MVTP) analyzes multiple signals such as sender authentication, domain reputation, embedded URLs, and email content to identify suspicious activity. Meanwhile, Deep URL Inspection performs time-of-click analysis to detect malicious links that may bypass initial scanning.

Additionally, the system features advanced BEC protection powered by AI models that operate in more than 20 languages, helping organizations detect impersonation attacks and social engineering attempts more effectively. Mimecast also includes malware detection and active sandboxing, which evaluates suspicious attachments in isolated environments to identify zero-day threats before they reach users.

Another key capability is Account Takeover Protection, which identifies unusual post-compromise behaviors by correlating identity signals and user activity patterns. This helps security teams detect breaches early and prevent attackers from spreading across enterprise systems.

Furthermore, Mimecast designed the solution to integrate easily within existing security ecosystems. The API connects with over 350 cybersecurity tools, including endpoint protection, XDR, SIEM, SOAR, and identity platforms from providers such as CrowdStrike, Okta, and Palo Alto Networks. This integration ensures that email threat intelligence flows directly into an organization’s broader security infrastructure, allowing faster threat response and improved visibility.

Beyond email protection, the platform also connects with Mimecast’s Human Risk platform, which analyzes how users interact with potential threats. By correlating email alerts with user behavior, insider risk signals, and generative AI activity, organizations gain deeper insights into potential vulnerabilities. This unified approach enables security teams to implement adaptive training programs, identify insider risks, and strengthen compliance monitoring.

Ultimately, Mimecast’s new API-based email security platform reflects a growing industry shift toward flexible and integrated cybersecurity solutions. By combining AI-powered threat detection with rapid deployment and broad ecosystem connectivity, Mimecast aims to help enterprises protect their workforce and digital communication channels more effectively.
