DoW Chooses Google’s Gemini AI to Power GenAI.mil Workforce

DoW Chooses Google’s Gemini AI to Power GenAI.mil Workforce

Google Cloud revealed that the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) has chosen Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government to become the first enterprise AI platform deployed on the U.S. Department of War’s (DoW) GenAI.mil system. This rollout will give access to more than 3 million military and civilian employees, marking one of the largest government-scale AI adoptions to date.

The Gemini for Government platform brings together Google’s FedRAMP High and DoW Impact Level 5 (IL5) authorized commercial cloud environment with advanced AI models and agentic tools. With this solution, the DoW aims to strengthen unclassified business processes, increase workforce productivity, and enhance operational clarity. Moreover, personnel across the department will be able to leverage capabilities such as enterprise-grade search, designed to simplify and speed up administrative workflows.

Through this AI-powered system, staff can easily summarize lengthy policy manuals, create compliance checklists tailored to individual projects, extract essential components from statements of work, and generate detailed risk assessments for mission planning. Additionally, Gemini for Government enables IL5-compliant data sovereignty controls, ensuring that all DoW data remains protected under strict security policies while driving modernization goals such as updating legacy systems and enabling faster decision-making.

As one of the world’s largest employers, the DoW’s adoption of Gemini for Government signals a major step toward using secure and scalable AI technologies to advance organizational efficiency. This deployment also underscores the platform’s ability to meet stringent defense-level requirements for security, reliability, and performance.

AI as a Foundation for DoW Productivity

Being the first AI platform introduced on GenAI.mil, Gemini for Government reflects the DoW’s vision of delivering advanced AI tools across its entire workforce. The department selected this solution due to its strong alignment with its high-security standards and need for rapid, accurate data processing.

One of the platform’s biggest advantages is its IL5 authorization, which allows it to operate within a protected, software-defined sovereign cloud. Here, the DoW can process sensitive unclassified data safely, with the assurance that none of it will train Google’s public models. This level of protection reinforces trust and minimizes risk across all operations.

The solution also supports daily tasks by automating repetitive administrative work, simplifying onboarding procedures, and accelerating contracting processes. With these functions, the DoW intends to free up valuable time for personnel to focus on mission-critical operations.

Another advantage lies in its commercial scalability and continuous innovation. Gemini for Government delivers enterprise-grade resilience, performance, and interoperability, enabling the DoW to remain at the forefront of AI advancements. As new models evolve, the platform ensures seamless integration, helping the department keep pace with rapid technological changes.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, emphasized the long-standing collaboration with U.S. government agencies, stating:

"Google has partnered with U.S. government agencies at all levels for decades to bring our cutting edge technologies to the public sector... This is a significant step in accelerating AI adoption across the public sector – all hosted within Google's secure and reliable systems."

Karen Dahut, CEO of Google Public Sector, added:

"This is a pivotal moment for government modernization... Our deep commitment to security, sovereign data protection, and the unique power of AI gives the DoW the ability to equip all of their personnel with modern tools to solve operational and productivity challenges with unprecedented speed."

With this deployment, the DoW sets a new benchmark for AI modernization in the public sector, demonstrating how secure and enterprise-ready AI can transform government operations at a massive scale.
