Weaviate Unveils Agent Skills for AI Coding Workflows

Weaviate has launched Weaviate Agent Skills, a new open-source repository designed to enhance how AI coding agents generate production-ready code for Weaviate workflows. With this release, the company strengthens its commitment to bridging high-speed AI development with reliable infrastructure.

The new toolkit integrates seamlessly with popular coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio Code, and Gemini CLI. As a result, developers can instruct these agents to generate accurate and production-grade code tailored specifically for Weaviate environments.

Importantly, this launch builds on the momentum of Weaviate’s Query Agent, first previewed in March 2025 and reaching general availability in September 2025. The Query Agent enables natural language searches across multiple collections while offering advanced capabilities such as intelligent query expansion, multi-collection routing, decomposition of complex questions, user-defined filters, and reranking for improved results. Developers can immediately experiment with Agent Skills using free Sandbox clusters available through Weaviate Cloud, which provide 14-day instances suitable for testing and can later scale into production-ready cloud environments.

Comprehensive Tools for Production AI

Weaviate Agent Skills provides granular scripts that support cluster management, including schema inspection, metadata retrieval, and collection creation. In addition, developers can manage the full data lifecycle with tools that import CSV, JSON, or JSONL files and generate example datasets. The repository also supports agentic search powered by Query Agent and advanced retrieval strategies such as hybrid search, pure semantic search, and keyword-based search with adjustable alpha parameters.

Beyond modular scripts, the platform includes cookbooks offering end-to-end blueprints for building real-world applications. These examples cover chatbot architectures built with FastAPI and Next.js, multimodal PDF RAG pipelines using ModernVBERT embeddings and models like Ollama or Qwen3-VL, and advanced RAG workflows incorporating decomposition, reranking, and persistent memory through DSPy optimization.

Streamlined Slash Commands

To further simplify development, Agent Skills introduces six intuitive slash commands that coding agents can automatically detect and execute. These commands allow developers to query collections, explore data metrics, fetch objects, run hybrid or semantic searches, and retrieve AI-generated answers with citations. Consequently, developers can interact with Weaviate environments efficiently without writing repetitive infrastructure code.

For example, a hybrid search command balances semantic and keyword retrieval using alpha blending, while a natural language query can instantly summarize vector database benefits from documentation collections.

CEO Vision and Open-Source Commitment

Bob van Luijt, Co-Founder and CEO of Weaviate, emphasized the strategic importance of this launch. "Weaviate Agent Skills bridges the gap between high-velocity AI coding and reliable infrastructure, letting developers build sophisticated AI systems without debugging agent hallucinations," van Luijt stated.

Since founding Weaviate in March 2019 as an open-source vector search engine, van Luijt has consistently advocated for accessible AI infrastructure. He positions Weaviate as a “batteries-included” stack that merges vector search, structured filtering, and agentic capabilities into one cohesive platform.

Faster Integration and Strategic Impact

Developers can install Agent Skills quickly using a single command or plugin managers in supported tools. After configuring environment variables with a Weaviate Cloud endpoint and API key, they can run guided setup commands to accelerate onboarding.

This release aligns with Weaviate’s broader 2025 advancements, including improved TypeScript and Python SDKs, support for multi-turn conversations, streaming responses, and new C# and Java clients.

Ultimately, Agent Skills tackles a critical industry challenge: AI coding agents often produce inaccurate or incomplete vector database code due to outdated knowledge or hallucinations. By offering verified, modular components, Weaviate reduces debugging time and accelerates the transition from prototype to production. Early adopters report up to threefold reductions in debugging effort for RAG pipelines and agentic applications, underscoring the practical impact of this innovation.
