A widespread networking outage at Cloudflare Inc. on Tuesday (18-11-2025) temporarily blocked user access to multiple major websites and services, including ChatGPT, social platform X, and NJ Transit’s digital channels. The global disruption affected both consumer-facing sites and enterprise systems that rely on Cloudflare’s infrastructure for connectivity and protection.
Cloudflare confirmed it was investigating an issue that “may impact multiple customers,” according to a notice posted on its website. During the incident, the company’s own service-status portal also struggled to load, reflecting the scale of the disruption. Cloudflare had previously scheduled maintenance in select regions earlier in the day, though it was unclear whether the two events were related.
Around one hour into the outage, Cloudflare reported that some systems were beginning to recover, but cautioned that users could continue experiencing elevated error rates while remediation efforts continued. As of 8 a.m. ET, Cloudflare stated it was still actively investigating the root cause.
Cloudflare’s technology sits between websites and their visitors, shielding them from cyberattacks, mitigating surges in traffic, and improving performance. Because of this central role, disruptions within Cloudflare’s network often ripple across the internet, affecting hundreds of thousands of companies worldwide.
This incident is the latest in a series of high-profile outages the company has faced over the years.
- In July 2019, a software bug caused a segment of Cloudflare’s network to consume excessive computing resources, pushing major websites offline for up to 30 minutes. Platforms such as Medium, Discord, Shopify, SoundCloud, Coinbase, and Dropbox were among those impacted.
- In June 2022, Cloudflare experienced another significant outage across 19 of its data centers, temporarily affecting major websites until service was restored roughly 90 minutes later.
Cybersecurity expert Alan Woodward, professor at the University of Surrey, noted that the outage underscores how dependent the internet has become on a small number of critical service providers.
“Cloudflare is the biggest company most people have never heard of,” he said. “This incident highlights the concentration of infrastructure on a few major players.”
The effects of Tuesday’s outage were felt across sectors. NJ Transit notified riders that both its website and mobile app were experiencing issues tied to the Cloudflare disruption, warning of possible delays in digital services.
Financial intelligence firm Moody’s also saw its website display a “server error” message during the downtime.
In early premarket trading, Cloudflare shares fell 4%, reflecting investor concerns about service reliability and operational impact.
Cloudflare continues to work toward full service restoration while investigating the underlying cause of the global disruption.
